The Wilton Diptych, about 1395–9
© The National Gallery, London
The Wilton Diptych is a small altarpiece and is one of the handful of English panel paintings that have survived from the Middle Ages. This portable diptych was created for Richard II, Kind of England from 1377 to 1399. The imagery in this painting was intensely personal to Richard as he was deeply devoted to the three saints who were central to his idea of scared kingship. The bed of flowers in the painting include blooms like rosemary and ferns, emblems of his first wife Anne, as well as irises and pimpernels of his second wife, Isabelle of France. Our florists have paired Peach Avalanche Roses that represent the flowers resting on the heads of the angels, while the blue Agapanthus and Germinis represent the strong blue and yellow aspects of the painting like the blue robes and shimmering hair of the angels.
These luxury flowers are inspired by the masterpieces housed at the National Gallery. Each bouquet is beautifully arranged by our floral designers exclusively for the National Gallery. Included you will receive a gift card print of the artwork and a National Gallery care guide.
